APPLIED TECHNOLOGY-LAKEVIEW JR. HIGH
6th Grade: The rockets were due last week. Students took them home and painted them for extra credit. Hopefully the kids were the one's that did the work (under parent supervision).
The rockets have been graded and students will be "fixing" any problems with them Monday and Tuesday. Some of the problems are: parachutes not packed correctly, nose-cones too tight (because of the spray paint leaking inside the body tube), launch lugs (straw looking thing on the side) lining up with the fins......
All of these items are safety issues when we go outside and launch them.
We will launch the rockets third trimester near the end of the year since the weather this time of year isn't too good.
7th and 8th Grade: These students are on their third module and should finish some time next week.
Remember all work can be "Made Up" without penalty if the student comes to open labs. Times are listed on the sheet that was sent home at the beginning of the trimester.

6th Grade: We are currently working on our Space and Rocketry module. Students are building a rocket from a kit during this module. Students can spray paint their rocket at home once it is completed for extra credit. We strongly encourage them to do the spray painting under parent supervision.

APPLIED TECHNOLOGY-LAKEVIEW JR. HIGH
6th Grade: They finished their rockets this week, turned them in for grading and were given their grading rubric grade sheet yesterday, Thursday. They are currently in lesson 5 working on their "Observation Log" worksheet about the planets. We should get out one day next week to fly the rockets.
7th Grade: Working on the third module. Should finish by the end of next week.
8th Grade: They are also working on the third module and should finish next week.

Cross country: The boy's team and two of the girls travel to Normal Illinios this weekend to compete in the state cross country meet. Go Spartans!!
Next Monday is the last practice and the last practice for Mr. Rodda. First, there will be a handicap race for the current runners. Slower runners get a head start and "technically" all runners should finish at the same time.
Second, there is a "Parent/Student Run" at about 4:00. The student runs a mile and then their parent will run, walk or crawl about 3/8 mile. Ribbons will be given to the top ten finishers (if there are that many).
Third, at about 4:30 there will be the "Run with Rodda". All of the team, any former runner and any of the parents are invited to run with Mr. Rodda on his final lap at Lakeview.

7th and 8th grade finished their second module this week. Several of the students need to come to open lab and do make up work for things they didn't finish. Come in soon!
6th grade finished the rockets this week. I had the students take them home yesterday if they planned on spray painting them for extra credit. I gave them a shoe box to put the rocket in so the rockets don't get damaged. Have fun painting them, but be careful. You don't want to put to thick a coat on at one time. Give the rocket some time to dry before puting on a second/third coat of paint.
ROCKETS ARE DUE NEXT WEDNESDAY after the four day weekend.

6th Grade is working on their rockets and the "Space and Rocketry" module.

7th Grade is on Day 6 1/2 of their second module and should finish next week on Wednesday or Thursday.

8th Grade, 5th period is on day 5 1/2 of the second module. They are a day behind because of the golf field trip. They will finish the module next week on Wednesday.

8th Grade, 6th period is on day 6 1/2 of the second module. They will finish Tuesday next week.

Cross Country is having a great season. Both the boys and girls won their meets on Tuesday against Butler and Westmont. Boys are 6-0. They finished first in the Old Quarry Invitational out of 12 teams. The boys also finished third out of 49 schools in the Troy Invitational !!!!!

6th Grade: All the rockets are flown for 3rd trimester. Wednesday this week we plan to fly the second semester rockets with Mrs. Conley's Health classes. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather.
7th Grade: Tomorrow, Wednesday we should finish the last module for the year. We will use Thursday for make-up work from this module and any remaining work from previous modules.

8th Grade: They are on their BOAT trip today. Tomorrow, they will finish up any unfinished work.

Friday is WOW day (widen-our-world) for 6th and 7th grade, where students will be working on individual independent study, topic of their choice projects.

Spray paint works the best. I have had numerous problems with brush paint, so I discourage using that. Some students get really creative with their spray painting, but this is not a requirement either. I will give the students a brief overview on spray painting their rockets. All Classes: we started a new Tri-mester last Friday. We are in the middle of ISAT testing and I do not see all the kids each day this week.
Students should have given their parents the PINK sheet from their "Orientation Packet" last weekend. Parents are asked to keep this sheet because questions might arise as their student goes through my class and the answer may lie on this sheet. If you, as a parent did not receive this sheet, ask your son or daughter for it.
Yellow sheets were due Tuesday (or Wednesday) with the signatures on it and the students passwords. This sheet is worth 40 points. These are easy points and you want to make sure the yellow sheet gets turned in as soon as possible.
LAB FEES are due by next Tuesday (March 8th). The fee is $20 and is explained on the "Pink Sheet".
Remember that Parent/Teacher conferences are tomorrow Thursday March 3rd.

I had to "Adjust" many of the grades because of "difficulties" associated with the new software.
I do believe we will be able to work these difficulties out over the next trimester. I will continue to adjust grades as needed.

The trimester ends the 12th of November. Just over two weeks left to complete all of your work.
6th Grade: The 6th grade is on day 6 1/2 of the third module. This module the students are working in pairs on individual modules (not like the first two where the were all working on the same thing).
7th Grade: The 7th grade is starting the fourth module Wednesday and should finish this module by the end of the trimester.
8th Grade: The 8th grade is on day four of the fourth module.
We are behind schedule this trimester because we spent extra days on the "Orientation" at the beginning of the trimester waiting for our new software. We currently have the new software but haven't worked the "bugs" out of it yet. Hope to have it operational by second trimester.

After missing school for a week following the spring break, last week was a wash for me. It took until the end of the week until I started feeling better.
6th Grade: Currently working on the Space and Rocketry module. Tomorrow, Wednesday the rocket project is due. We will work on the project in class, putting on the stickers, installing the rocket engines, adding the "wadding" and installing the igniter in the rocket engine. They will then be ready to launch them. Next week is our projected launch time, when the weather is good we will be ready to launch.

Well, we are almost done with this trimester. ISAT's are playing havoc with our schedule this week. Classes are rotated around the ISAT's so that students do not miss the same classes each day.
All classes will receive only one grade from this module. The grade will be a combined "Worksheet" and "Lab Performance" grade. It will be based on how many days we spent on the module and how much they should have accomplished for the number of days.

This is IOWA standardize test week.
6th grade is working on the Space and Rocketry Module. They started to build the rockets last week and should finish it this week. They can bring it home and spray paint it for extra credit when we finish working on it in class. If they spray paint it, spray paint works best because the fins and nosecone are made of plastic and not all paints work well on plastic.
They are required to put some of the stickers on it as part of the project. The stickers are included in the kit.
I will be posting the due date as soon as we get closer to finishing the rocket in class.

7th Grade:
They are now working on their second module. We finished the first module last week (computer animation). We worked on that module as an entire class all working on the same module. Now, they are all working on different modules.
Generally, it takes 7th graders about ten days to finish a module.
8th Grade:
They are on day six of their second module. The 8th graders typically take about eight days on a module. We anticipate they will finish the latter part of this week, however because of the IOWA tests that may change.

Congratulations to the Cross Country teams on their fine performances in the conference meet Thursday.
The boy's team finished in second place just a few points from first.
Amanda took first place in the girls race with a winning two mile time of 12:22.

6th Grade: We finished our rockets Wednesday and turned them in for grading. Some of the paint jobs were outstanding. Micah's paint job was the best I have seen in all the years of doing this project. We will fly the rockets as soon as the weather allows.
7th Grade: They are on day two and three for 1st and 2nd period of their third module.
8th Grade: They are on day five for 5th period and day six for 8th period.
Remember we have a number of times in the morning and during study halls for students to come to the lab and do make up work.

Cross Country runs in the Sectional meet this weekend. We hope to have a number of runners qualify for the state meet the following weekend.

6th Grade: We are working on the Space and Rocketry module. We have spent several days in the classroom working on the model rocket construction. They should be ready to fly soon. I will have the students take them home this week so they can spray paint them. I have told them several times to let their parents know about the spray painting. So, parents don't be surprised when they ask you (maybe at the last minute) to get some spray paint for the rocket.
We will fly the rockets on a nice day once the rockets are graded.
7th Grade: Is working on their second module. We should be done with this module at the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
8th Grade: They are nearing the end of the second module. They should be done in the next two days.

6th Grade: We are in Lesson 2 of the Space and Rocketry module. Students started their rocket project today. We should be done with the rocket sometime next week. You can spray paint it at home for extra credit (up to 10 points).

7th Grade: Working on the final steps of the animation. Students are working on adding sound and text. For extra credit they can add rain, lightning, fade the text or add extra text.
Students should finish the module Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

8th Grade: Students are in the third day of the second module. They will finish sometime next week.

Well, we made it through another trimester. We ended the second trimester last Friday. All grades have gone out. Students in 8th grade almost completed six modules, 7th grade completed five and sixth grade completed four modules.
Good Luck to all of my second trimester students in their new class, Health.

I now take over the students that were in Music last trimester. The first week of class we spend on "Orientation" for the lab. Students are given a packet the first day and will keep this for the entire trimester. We will refer back to this packet throughout the entire trimester.

We are near the end of the second trimester (a week and a half).
6th Grade: They are on day 3 1/2 of the fourth module.
7th Grade: They are on their fifth module.
8th Grade: They are on their sixth module.

Remember that the end of the trimester is NEXT Friday (not this Fri.). All work must be turned in by the end of the trimester (Friday 3/6/09). Good Luck.

Man this week went fast.

6th Grade: We are still on the Space and Rocketry module. Seventh hour is working on videos in the Deep Space Explorer software. Sixth hour is in lesson for working up to the D.S.E. software.
Rockets were turned in for grading Thursday. I hope to grade them this weekend. They are sitting next to my desk here at home in the boxes. I have a few pictures I hope to get on the blog next week.
We will fly the rockets at the end of the year when they are in health class. Mrs. Conley will have her health class come visit one day, we will go outside and fly them. Can't wait.

7th Grade: They are nearing the end of the second module. Should finish Tuesday or Wed.

8th Grade: Had their dance today so we only had fifth hour class. They are on day 4 of the module. Eighth hour is on day three.

6th grade is still working on Space and Rocketry. Both classes learned how to use the Deep Space Explorer software this week. We will continue to use both the Lab Volt "Space and Rocketry" module software and the Deep Space Explorer software for the next five or six days.
ROCKETS ARE DUE TOMORROW, THURSDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you took your rocket home to paint it, be sure to bring it back.
Remember, painting is for extra credit. No need for mom or dad to have to and go out to buy paint. Use your allowance if you need to buy paint.

7th grade is working independently on the second module. We should finish in about five days. Now that the first module is over the students are "masters" at the Flash Animation software.

8th grade is working independently on the third module now. Second module grades have been posted.

Week Ending 1-9-09

6th Grade finished their first module last week. Grades were good and I believe they learned what technology really is, not just computers and software.
7th Grade: Second hour finished the Computer Animation module Friday, first hour will finish on Monday.
8th Grade: They are in day 4 of the second module.

IOWA tests start next Tuesday, Good Luck.

All classes have gone through most of the "Orientation" for the lab.

7th and 8th grade are starting modules today (Thursday).

7th Grade will all do Animation for their first module.

6th Grade: On day 5 of the fourth module. We should finish up at the end of next week.

7th Grade: First period finished the fourth module yesterday and is starting a new module today. Second period is finishing the fourth module today. They will start the new module Monday.

8th Grade: Should finish the fifth module today. There is a possibility that we won't finish the module and in that case will finish on Monday.

The kids will be at home that day. Teachers will be at the institute.

6th Grade: Seventh period finally got to fly their rockets friday. The weather was terrific. Kids always enjoy the activity.
We will be finishing the third module this week. Not sure what day yet.

7th Grade: First period is on day 3 1/2 of the fourth module. Second period is on day 2 1/2 of the fourth module (one day behind because of the field trip).

8th Grade: Started the fifth module today. They should have all their work in for previous modules. If not, come to open labs.

6th Grade: We flew the rockets in the 6th period class yesterday. Boy was it a beautiful day; warm, sunny and very little wind. Hope all the kids liked it?
We should finish the second module today or tomorrow. All paperwork will be due for the module. Be sure to bring it to class for turn in.

7th Grade: On Day 2 of the third module. If you have make up work to do, you can make it up with no penalty. What a deal!!

8th Grade: On Day 7 of the third module. Tomorrow will probably be the last day. Be sure to finish on time. Turn in all of your paperwork!

Applied Technology Classes 10-3-08

6th Grade: We finished our rockets yesterday. They can take them home (need a shoe box for this) and spray paint them for extra credit. The rocket due date is Tuesday.
Spray paint is much better than brush paint as the brush paint typically doesn't stick well to the plastic nose cone and the plastic fins. Be careful when you spray paint the area by the nosecone and the body tube. You don't want to get paint underneath the body tube where the nosecone fits inside. If you do, it acts like glue and it will be too dangerous to fly (if the nosecone can't come off then it comes back to the earth like a dart, that is why I check each and every rocket connection between the nosecone and the body tube). Good Luck!

Progress Reports come out Tuesday. If you have missing work, it needs to be completed and turned in by the end of the day Monday.

DEAR PARENTS,

This is an informational page for you to learn a little bit about me and the Applied Technology course your student (son/daughter) is in. Please read.

I started teaching at Lakeview in 1980 as the Industrial Arts teacher. In 2000, when the addition was completed, we decided to change the Industrial Arts program to an Applied Technology program.

The primary objective of the Applied Technology class is to expose students to the technologies of today preparing them for the tomorrow. It is a “hands-on” technology experience with equipment and software at each station.

At a module, students complete some kind of project. Some projects are computer generated such as: computer drawings (CAD), architectural drawings, computer graphic designs, computer animations. Some projects are hands on projects such as: radio shows, balsa bridges, plastic molds, weather forecasts, CNC milled projects, robotic arm programs, balsa planes, video produced commercials and completed rockets.

A "module" is an individual unit of study that two students complete over a period of eight to ten days. Each module is an individual self-sustaining "station" with all the curriculum, software, computers and other equipment necessary to learn about a particular technology.

Students could study any of the following modules during a trimester: Aerodynamics, Alternative Energy, Animation, Architecture, Automation & Robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Graphic Design, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling, Digital Video Editing, Engineering & Stress Analysis, Exploratory Electronics, Exploratory Mechanisms, Fiber Optics & Lasers, Flight Simulation, Fluid Power, Introduction to Technology, Meteorology & Forecasting, Plastics Technology, Radio Broadcasting, Space & Rocketry, and Video Production.

Some of the other equipment at the modules are: a wind tunnel, laser, fiber optics trainers, electronics trainer, CNC milling machine, weather station, vacuum mold machine, injection mold machine, robotic arm, video camera & lighting equipment, fluid power trainer, alternative energy trainer, exploring mechanisms trainer, radio broadcasting equipment, and an engineering stress analyzer.

Students will use the "Lab-Volt" curriculum software to complete a module. It is a seven lesson curriculum with quizzes, and a Post Test. Students in this course will learn about the five areas of technology: Communication, Transportation, Manufacturing, Construction and Bio-Related technologies.

Students in sixth grade will complete three to four modules. Seventh grade will complete five modules. Eighth grade will complete five to six modules.

The uniqueness of this program, presents new challenges to the student. Teams of two students, working cooperatively are guided through a seven lesson curriculum that focuses on a particular technology. After completing each technology or “module” students rotate to a new module.

To be successful, students must become independent learners. Students will need to use the Applied Technology Problem Solving Model: “re-read the information, discuss a solution (with their partner) and then ‘do or try something’ to solve the problem”.

The absence policy for make up work is: when a student is absent, the most important items at a module will have to be made up. The student must discuss missed work with the teacher when they return so the teacher can tell the student what work may be skipped and what needs to be made up.

Work that needs to be “made up”, can be done in “Open Lab”. These Open Labs are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:25 am. to 7:50 am. The lab is also open during study halls. Open Lab for study hall “A” is on Tuesday and Thursday. Open Lab for study hall "B" is on Monday and Wednesday. There is no penalty for students to do any make up work as long is it is turned in a reasonable period of time. Students in band are not to skip band to come to open labs !!

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

At the Modules, students will:
Collaborate on assigned work to complete the tasks at a module.
Become independent learners.
Use the "Applied Technology Problem Solving Model".
Research careers associated with a module.
Use a computer each day to complete tasks.
Show proficiency at various third party software packages.
Complete a "Time-line" activity.
Demonstrate an understanding of the "Environmental Impacts" of technology.

STATE STANDARDS

Students will:
Perform activities that demonstrate an understanding how to use technology in communication and problem solving. (State Technology Standard 2A)
Use industry standard software (at many modules) to demonstrate knowledge on the uses of computers and technology in education. (State Technology Standard 1F)
Adhere to copyright laws in the access and use of the information from technology sources. (State Technology Standard 2H)
Explore and use computer/technology resources including educational software. (State Technology Standard 3B)
Use on-line search tools. (State Technology Standard 6D)
Use instruction that fosters/reflects higher level thinking skills in problem solving (State Technology Standard 8D)
Co-operatively learn in groups as part of the students' tasks and assignments. (State Technology Standard 8E)

Fees

There are many consumable materials used in this class. To help defer the cost of the consumable materials, a $20.00 lab fee is necessary. This is not the same “Technology Fee” paid during registration, this is an “Applied Technology Fee”. Please pay the lab fee within the first week of class. Checks may be made payable to: District #66. We prefer a check, but will accept cash. For cash payments, please put it in an envelope with the students name on it.

LAB FEE DUE DATE: September 3rd.
